Twenty employers, ranked
Ranked by score out of 100. Open a row for the breakdown, the evidence with its source type and date, your visa route and the email. Each row carries a status that says what kind of evidence sits behind it.
- Confirmeddirect, dated evidence of hiring from abroad
- Inferredstrong indirect signals, no direct proof
- Unknownnothing found either way
- Negative signalevidence points the other way
- Channela route, not an employer
Send plan, 14 days in three waves
Days count from the day you send your first email. Send from your own address, in the order below.
- Day 0Wave 1Targets 1 to 7
Two or three emails a day, from your own address, in rank order.
- Day 3Wave 2Targets 8 to 12 and 14 to 15
Start before wave 1 answers. Silence for three days means nothing yet.
- Day 7Wave 3Targets 13 and 16 to 20
The long shots and the channels. Same care, shorter emails.
- Day 10One follow-upEveryone who has not replied
One only, never more. The follow-up text is in the report.
- Day 14Tracker back to e-expatSend us your tracker
We read it before your route call and adjust the second batch if you asked for one.
Your checklist
What to have ready before the first reply arrives. Each item is written into the emails as a commitment, so the dates matter. For a developer there is no professional registration; the gate is the employer’s certification and your proof of qualification.
Qualification
- Degree certificate and transcript (ISCED level 5 or above), apostilled and translated into Portuguese by a certified translator; the Tech Visa asks for it unless you prove 5 years of specialised experience
- Employer letters covering the 6 years, with role, stack and dates, on letterhead; they double as the 5-year proof and go in the visa file
- Public portfolio: a GitHub profile with two or three repositories you can walk through, one of them Java with tests, one Python; the link goes in every email
- Cloud certification if you hold one (AWS, Azure or GCP), with the credential ID; note the exam date if booked
Language
- English CV, one or two pages, no photo required, stack listed by years; state English as full professional proficiency only if you can interview in it, several forms ask exactly that
- Portuguese is not required by the Tech Visa or by any posting in this report; state your real level and do not round up
- Book a Portuguese course anyway and note the start date; it answers the question an HR team is thinking but not asking
Documents
- Passport valid for at least 12 months
- Criminal record certificate from every country lived in for more than a year, apostilled, under 90 days old at filing
- Proof of means and travel insurance for the consular file; the employer’s Termo de Responsabilidade covers the rest
- Answer “work permit for Portugal: no” honestly on application forms and name the Tech Visa in the next field
Tracker
Fill in as you send. On day 14, send it back to us.
What we could not verify, and who can
- Whether targets 6, 11, 15 and 17 renewed their Tech Visa certification after the dates shown on IAPMEI’s list, which is dated 18 February 2025 and is the latest published, and whether target 2 renews on 21 October 2026.Who can: IAPMEI, or the employer’s HR team. Each draft asks whether the company will issue a Termo de Responsabilidade, which only a certified company can do, so the answer arrives with the reply.
- Which Porto engineering roles target 1 has open today.Who can: Only the company; its careers site refused our fetch and the Java core-banking posting we found is closed. The draft names that role and asks for the current equivalent.
- Whether target 7’s application form question about a work permit for Portugal is a filter or a data point.Who can: Its recruiters. The draft answers it in the first paragraph and names the Tech Visa.
- The euro figure AIMA and your consulate apply for 1.5 times the national average gross annual salary in 2026, and whether three times the IAS alone is accepted.Who can: The consulate and AIMA, whose site could not be fetched. We give you both figures and the law text; every public pay band in this report clears both.
- Current processing time for Tech Visa files at your consulate; the only public signal is a company CEO’s complaint about delays (September 2025).Who can: The consulate. We give you the question to ask and the 20-working-day limit IAPMEI applies to the company’s side.
- Whether target 20 has hired a developer from abroad.Who can: Only the company. That is why it is Unknown, not a zero.
Method
Scores weigh abroad-hiring evidence, role fit, hiring activity, language and company size; the evidence lines under each employer are what the score rests on.
The status says what kind of evidence sits behind the first criterion. Confirmed means the employer appears on IAPMEI’s Tech Visa list, fetched 17 October 2026, with a validity date after that day; Inferred means it appears with a validity date already passed, or is not on the list but shows strong indirect signals; Unknown means nothing was found either way. A Channel is a route to several employers, such as a job board or the register itself, and is scored as one. No employer in this report states visa sponsorship in a posting; the register is the evidence. Postings were re-checked when this report was generated on 17 October 2026; anything older than 90 days is marked in its evidence line.
We did not contact any employer, we take no commission from any of them, and where a contact could not be verified we say so instead of guessing.
